The Billionaire's Mistake (Anya and Daniel)

MISTAKE 162

Chapter 162: Attempted murder.

“I’m already on it,” Bradshaw replied. “I think we need to get a couple unmarked units stationed around the hospital and some plainclothes officers inside keeping an eye on things around the clock. No way we can risk losing this guy as a witness if he really was attacked.” This content belongs to Nô/velDra/ma.Org .

“Agreed. I’ll put some calls in to coordinate the undercover teams right away,” Jackson said crisply. “While you’re stuck on bedside manner duty for now, maybe I can do some digging into the wife’s financials–policies, assets, that kind of thing. If there’s a money motive behind this, we need to know about it.

“Good call,” Bradshaw agreed. “This just screams premeditated in my gut. That level of panic she showed? It’s like she knows exactly how much hot water she’ll be in if Jones wakes up and rats her out!

“Then let’s make sure we have all our bases covered to protect him and catch her in the act if she tries anything else,” Jackson stated firmly. “I’m not letting another one of these transgressions get buried or swept aside for lack of due diligence.”

Bradshaw could hear the passion and resolve in his partner’s voice. Jackson had been a homicide detective for over a decade, and he’d seen too many instances of injustice and double standards when it came to crimes of domestic violence or spousal abuse, especially when wealth or status was involved. It made him zealous about defending the vulnerable at all costs. For some reason, he thought that Martin was the vulnerable one here.

“You know I’m right there with you, partner,” Bradshaw assured him. “Jones’s as good as secured under our watch from here on out until we get to the bottom of what really happened, His wife isn’t going to get another opportunity to jeopardize his safety.”

“Good man. I’ll check back in as soon as I have those undercover details locked down on our

end.”

The conversation finished, and Bradshaw released a tense breath while watching the entrance to Martin Jones’s room. Both he and his partner were dedicated to revealing the full extent of Gina Jones’s lies. They suspected that she had prioritized her own selfish desires over her husband’s well–being. It was too suspicious to be ignored.

They just had a feeling this woman was hiding something and their gut was something they

acted on.

Gina hurriedly walked back and forth across Martin’s hospital room, her footsteps echoing on the linoleum floor. Her hands were intertwined in front of her, with her knuckles displaying a white color due to her tight grip. Every now and then, she would quickly look towards her motionless husband, who was unconscious in the bed, with a panicked expression.

“Why can’t you just die?” she found herself muttering under her breath, the words laced with desperation. “Why do you have to wake up now, when everything is finally falling into place?”

Her mind kept going back to that day when she had pushed Martin down the big stairs in their mansion’s entrance. She could still picture it clearly his shocked face as he fell backwards, the awful sound when his head hit the floor, the red blood slowly spreading from where he landed. Right then, she was sure her plan had worked. Martin would die, and she would finally get to live rich with all his money.

But now her terrible secret might come out because the very man she tried to kill could wake up and tell everyone.

tried to finish killing him now, everyone would know it was her. She would be the obvious killer, ruined by wanting his money too

much.

No matter what, Martin could not wake up. Not now. She had to make sure his life ended on this bed. She could not help but glare at his still body.

She would have called her daughter to brain storm, but she had long run away in fear when she heard about the take over. Kelsey and Courtney were afraid of being charged with

embezzlement.

If it was any other situation, she would have said they were over reacting, but she was sure that those two sisters, Emma and Anya would not let them go.

Her son was the only one left but he was still too young. She had to dot his lone. She strolled over to Martin’s bed side as took a seat.

Sitting in the chair by Martin’s bed, she put her face in her shaking hands as angry tears fell. She had been so close to getting everything she wanted, so near to getting the fancy life she thought she deserved. Now it was all falling apart, and she had nobody to help her…

Except…

Suddenly sitting up straight, Gina grabbed her phone from her purse with shaky hands. She opened a special app and called the first number in her secret contact list, just labeled “L.” They picked up right away.

“Hi, it’s me,” she whispered frantically. “Martin he’s going to wake up soon. The doctor said he’s showing signs of coming out of his coma any minute!”

“Slow down, slow down,” the man’s deep voice came through the phone, trying to sound calming. “Just breathe and tell me what’s happening calmly.”

Gina tried to make her breathing steadier like he said. “The doctor…he said Martin should wake up very soon. If he tells the police what happened, what I did to put him in this state…I could lose everything we’ve been working for.”

“I see.” He paused like he was thinking about this problem. “Did you manage to move his company shares to our secret account before this happened?”

She shook her head even though he couldn’t see it. “No, not all of them. His awful nieces got most of his business stuff after he got sick, those greedy vultures. They only left him with about 2% of the business, they control everything else now.”

“Which means you only get his money and houses if he dies,” he said seriously.

“Exactly.” Gina’s voice got super quiet. “And if …if I’m the one who kills him, those nieces will easily figure out it was me and stop me from getting anything.”

“Then we only have one option,” her lover said, sounding very sure. “Martin Jones needs to die, but in a way that can’t be traced back to you.

Gina’s heart jumped. “You mean…get someone else to…?”

“I’ll arrange everything to handle this secretly,” he promised. “Nothing can lead back to you, not when we’re this close to getting everything we want.”

She had trouble swallowing because she was so scared. “But the police already think I might have done something when he first went into this coma. If he dies now, they’ll think it was me no matter what.”

“Not if I plan this perfectly and get professionals to do it right,” he said confidently. “You’ll be far away when it happens, giving you a perfect excuse. Just stay quiet and do what I tell you when I tell you, and soon we can forget this ever happened.”

Gina felt herself starting to relax as she listened to him sound so sure. He was right – she just needed to trust him. After coming this far, she couldn’t chicken out now.

“Okay,” she said, sounding stronger now. “I’ll do what you say. Just…tell me what I need to do.

“Of course. Everything will be fixed soon, I promise.”
