MISTAKE 161
Chapter 161: Plotting his death
“Oh Martin,” she whispered, approaching his bedside. “Is there anything you actually own? You did not own the company, now you did not own the house.” She resisted the urge to slap him, knowing that the mark would be seen by a nurse. She paced around the room in
frustration.
“What was the use of marrying you? What is the use of you living? Why can’t you just die?”
she muttered.
A small, dark part of her wondered if it would be better to kill him now. But those feelings had been borne of one heated, fleeting moment of anger. She did not dare to actually do it. She was already suspected by the police for harming him, if she tried anything, she would be the first to be arrested. She did not feel bad for wanting to kill him. This was a desperate thought borne from her dissatisfaction towards his uselessness; surely no sane person could hold it against
her.
As if her doubts had summoned it, the hospital room door opened to reveal two figures entering Martin’s doctor, along with a grim–looking police officer. Gina felt her stomach drop.
“Mrs. Jones,” the doctor began in a gentle tone. “This is Officer Bradshaw. He just needs to ask you a few questions.”
The pit in Gina’s gut yawned wider. They knew. Somehow, they’d found out about those terrible things she had done.
“You have nothing to worry about if you just tell the truth, ma’am,” the cop intoned, stepping closer with a notepad in hand.
“I thought this was an accident? Why are you getting involved?” Gina asked.
“Someone reported that the accident did not seem to be normal. We have enough reason to at least look into their claims,” Officer Bradshaw said.
“It is probably my nieces. They have always hated me and since I was the one at home with him when the accident took place, they suspect me. If Martin could wake up all these could be solved.” Gina looked at Martin’s still form on the bed with sad eyes. But this was nothing compared to what she felt inside. It was rage. Why was she in this situation? Was it not because of this useless man? His own father ignored him and handed all his property to his sister. But right now, Gina was more afraid than angry.
Gina felt her throat constrict with fear. She wanted to protest her innocence some more, but what if this officer already had evidence against her? Her mind whirred frantically until the doctor’s voice broke through her panicked haze.
“I should add…Martin is showing signs of potentially emerging from his coma very soon. A
turn in his condition like that may have simply delayed the process, but it seems he’ll make a full recovery before too long.”
At those words, Gina’s fieart plummeted while a new, bone–chilling realization crept up her spine. If Martin awoke, he would tell them everything; she was the one who pushed him down the stairs. If he testified against her, she would be finished. Her world could come crashing down irreparably. She did try to kill him.
As her hands began to tremble violently, the police officer’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. Ma’am? Are you alright?
Gina felt her throat unstick as she finally found her voice – though it emerged as calm as she
could muster.
“Yes! I am so happy to hear this. So much has happened since he went into a coma. When he wakes up, everything should return to how it has always been,” she said with a hopeful look in her eyes.
Gina’s heart pounded in her ears as the doctor’s words sank in Martin could wake up from his coma soon. She had always hoped for her husband’s recovery, but now that it seemed imminent, sheer panic gripped her. If Martin regained consciousness, he would surely reveal what she had done to him in a moment of panicked desperation.
She struggled to maintain her composure as the doctor checked Martin’s vitals and made some notes on his chart. The police officer who had accompanied him, Officer Bradshaw, watched her with a hawkish gaze. Gina could feel his eyes boring into her, as if he could see right through to her guilty conscience.
After what felt like an eternity, the doctor excused himself, leaving Gina alone with the imposing officer. She barely had a chance to draw a shaky breath before he spoke up.
“Mrs. Jones, I need to ask you some questions about the incident that led to your husband’s current condition,” he stated, flipping open a small notepad. “To begin, can you walk me through exactly what happened the day Mr. Jones was admitted? Who was present, what he was doing beforehand, any confrontations or unusual behavior?”
Gina’s throat went dry as she fought to regulate her breathing. They were investigating how Martin’s coma had occurred – which meant suspicion had already been cast upon her
involvement.
“It…it was just an accident, officer,” she managed in a wavering tone. “We were home alone, and Martin slipped on the staircase. He fell and hit his head very badly before I could get to him in time.” NôvelDrama.Org content rights.
The lies tasted like acid on her tongue, burning her from the inside out with their deception But she had to try and maintain her version of events as long as possible.
Officer Bradshaw’s expression remained impassive as he jotted something down. “I see. And there were no witnesses to corroborate your account of what transpired?”

Gina shook her head a little too quickly. “N–no, it was just the two of us, like I said. His children never come around…they don’t exactly approve of me. My son was up in his room when it happened.”
She mentally kicked herself – that was laying it on too thick. But Bradshaw simply nodded, his face betraying nothing.
“Of course, we’ll need to investigate thoroughly regardless. Families can often be… complicated, as I’m sure you know.” His tone remained infuriatingly neutral. “Now, I’ll need
to walk me through the sequence of events once more from the very beginning…”
you
The questions continued to flow, each one seemingly more pointed than the last as the officer drilled into her for every minute detail she could provide. Gina found herself growing increasingly flustered, her story beginning to fray at the edges as she struggled to recall the fabricated sequence of events exactly as she’d first stated.
By the time Bradshaw had finally exhausted his line of questioning, Gina was a sweating, trembling mess. He regarded her with those same unreadable eyes for a long moment before tucking his notepad away.
“Well, thank you for your cooperation today, Mrs. Jones,” he said evenly. “This is all very helpful information that will be included in my report. We’ll let you know if any other… insights come to light.”
With that bland statement and a curt nod, he turned and strode from the room, leaving Gina to wonder just how much he had seen through her lies.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Bradshaw pulled his cell phone from his pocket and hit the second speed–dial number.
“Jackson, it’s me,” he said when his partner picked up. “Yeah, I just finished questioning the wife about Jones’s situation.”
“Well, what did you make of her?” Jackson asked. “You were right to insist I of going myself – I tend to let my temper get the better of me in these cases.”
und you!
Bradshaw sighed. “You were right to have me go, that’s for sure. I’ve got a really bad feeling about this whole thing after talking to Mrs. Jones. She was a nervous wreck from the second 1 mentioned her husband potentially waking up soon.”
“Too panicked for it to be just about some family drama, huh?” Jackson guessed.
“Exactly. It was way more than that.” Bradshaw quickly outlined the details of his interview with Gina, including her transparent attempts to cast blame on Martin’s estranged children. Jackson let out a low whistle. “Sounds like those Nieces were right on the money to raise concerns about foul play. We’d better get some extra security measures in place fast, before the wife gets any ideas about keeping her husband quiet once and for all.”
