CHAPTER 25
Chapter 25 Investigation by Private Investigator
Olivia couldn’t even say the wine was bad; it was just plain awful.
If Jessie hadn’t stopped her, she would’ve been flirting up a storm with someone in the private room. Jessie had never seen her cling to men, calling herself an empty
nester.
Seeing her completely drunk, Jessie had no choice but to take her back to her newly rented apartment.
Olivia’s job was as a real estate agent, and she picked out the best place for Jessie. The place suited Jessie’s taste perfectly, so she decided to move in right away.
After a boozy night, she slept like a log and woke up when the sun was already high.
Olivia beat her to the punch, preparing breakfast. They both silently brushed off last night’s escapade.
Adults were good at hiding their vulnerabilities during the day, and Olivia hurriedly rushed to the doorway with high heels on.
Munching on a slice of toast, she mumbled, “Breakfast’s ready. I’m running late. See you later, sis.”
“Olivia, I might be swamped these days, won’t be around much,” Jessie called out to her.
“Don’t worry. Do you think I’m just going to throw money around for no reason? Last night was like a tribute to our youth that’s slipping away. Today, I’m back in the game. Who needs guys when you’ve got money? But seriously, if you need help, just tell me. No need to work yourself to the bone with multiple part–time jobs.”
“Yeah, I got it.” Jessie gently hugged Olivia and walked her to the door.
“Don’t worry, Olivia. You’ll find someone better. Sometimes, today’s tough times pave the
way for tomorrow’s happiness.”
Olivia teased. “You’re trying to console me now? If such a great guy slips away,. where will you find someone better?”

“In the future?” Jessie smiled softly, gazing towards the sun. “Who knows…

Olivia was about to head out when she was embraced from behind by Jessie. “I’ll be pretty tied up these days. But once things settle down, let’s hang out. And please take care of yourself, especially with the snow coming. Even if there’s no one to hold your hand, make sure you’re looking after yourself, okay?”
“Okay.” Original from NôvelDrama.Org.
After seeing Olivia off, Jessie tidied up the room before finally turning on her phone.
She unexpectedly noticed missed calls from Chase last night, probably about the divorce. But she’s tied up these days, so she couldn’t get back to him.
Apart from Chase, there were also a bunch of missed calls from Celia. So, she decided to call her back.
Celia picked up quickly, sounding concerned. “Jessie, why haven’t you been picking up my calls? I’ve been super worried about you lately. How much more money do you need? I can transfer it to you right away.”
As Jessie listened to the waves crashing against the rocks, she started feeling a lot calmer.
It had been years since her mom left, and she still couldn’t shake off her resentment. She just couldn’t figure out why her mom left her.
Finding out she was Linda’s stepmother only made things worse for Jessie. Why does she have to be Linda’s stepmom?
No matter how sad she felt, Jessie knew there was nothing she could do to change the situation.
“Mom, I’m okay. No need to fret. Chase gave me some money, so you don’t have to worry about Dad’s medical bills.”
Celia couldn’t shake off her concerns, especially picturing her leaving in the pouring rain. “Where are you now? I want to meet up and make up for all those years I missed with you.”
Jessie looked at the azure sea and said calmly, “Mom, if you cared, you wouldn’t have been missing for years without a single call. And Dad? You wouldn’t have

given him the cold shoulder after you got back. My bad, I acted impulsively and forgot you’d moved on. I won’t make that mistake again.”
Jessie, I…”
“Mom, can’t we just go back to how things were? I’ll look after Dad, and you can pretend I never existed. I’ll do the same.
She wasn’t upset about losing face in front of Linda; it was Celia’s indifference after going abroad.
When she needed her the most, she was with Linda, taking care of someone else’s daughter.
She couldn’t blame Celia for her decisions, but–she couldn’t just let it all go either.
After hanging up, she decided to quit her part–time job and texted Chase that she was swamped lately and they’d have to reschedule the divorce.
No matter what the truth was, there was no going back for her and Chase.
Goodbye. We won’t be friends, let alone lovers.
The last missed call was from that private investigator she hired before. Jessie’s heart skipped a beat. It seems there’s a lead.
