Chapter 586
Chapter 586
Parker looked at Derek with a half smile and his tone was very firm.
Derek stared at Parker's face with icy eyes. He'd expected to see a panicked expression on his face
when he uncovered his plot.
But he'd got an unexpected answer.
Was Parker so confident that he believed Meredith wouldn't have any doubts about him?
Such confidence somehow annoyed Derek.
Because he was well aware that Meredith had never fully believed his words.
This was the karma of all his mistakes in the past, which he would bear without complaining, but it was
intolerable for him that another man had gained her unconditional trust.
"It's her decision to believe you or not, not yours."
Derek spoke slowly after a long time.
Perhaps he really needed to find out how important Parker was in Meredith's heart.
Parker shrugged, his face indifferent. "Then go ahead and tell her. You don't have to forewarn me,
because... I don't care at all."
After that, Parker got into his car and drove away.
Derek clenched his fists and stared after the car until it was gone. He felt a suffocating feeling that he
didn't know how to unleash.
After deliberating for a moment, Derek called Meredith. Escape was not a solution. He needed an
answer.
Meredith was in the hospital and about to leave for the school to pick up Easton. Her eyes dimmed
when she received Derek's call.
She wondered why he called her. Wasn't he supposed to be busy dating Evelyn?
With a wry smile on her lips, she connected her phone. "What's wrong?"
Meredith's voice inexplicably unsettled Derek. "I need to have a word with you, face to face. It's
something really important."
"I'll go to pick up Easton in a minute. Just say it on the phone."
Meredith rebuffed Derek without hesitation. Gossips about his love affair with another woman had just
spread this morning and now he called to say he wanted to meet her? What was he doing?
Derek frowned and perceived reluctance in Meredith's voice. "Then I'll wait for you outside Easton's
school. We can talk while waiting."
After saying that, Derek hung up without giving Meredith the chance to refuse. Then he directly drove
to Easton's school.
Meredith looked at her phone and her brows puckered uncontrollably.
Notwithstanding, she had to pick up Easton no matter what.
She pondered and couldn't think of anything she'd done wrong. There was nothing she should be afraid
of. Meredith then asked the driver to send her to school.
On the way to school, Meredith looked out the window, abstracted.
After a while, her phone rang. It was Parker.
"Evelyn has had the result of the physical check-up sent over. Everything is fine. She can have the
surgery at any time."
"Really? That's great." Meredith heaved a sigh of relief.
"I'll talk to her and get her to agree to the operation as soon as possible."
"Okay. That's very kind of you."
Meredith did not have any doubts. After all, Parker was the person her mother trusted the most besides
herself. She was very reassured to leave this matter to him.
Parker's lips curled into a smile because of her words.
He was not surprised to get such an answer, because Meredith was never on guard against him.
Thinking about this, Parker felt a little guilty. After all, he indeed had done something underhand this
time, but…
He recalled the five years when she'd been gone; when he'd lived in agony every day; when the future
had seemed so bleak and he'd worked non-stoppingly to numb himself; when he'd been hellbent on
avenging her on the Xaviers.
He didn't want to live like that again.
Therefore, he could only choose to be selfish. Only in this way could he get everything he wanted.
After about ten minutes, Meredith arrived at the school.
She easily spotted Derek's limited edition Rolls-Royce by the school gate which attracted a lot of
attention.
She took a deep breath and then walked over calmly.
"What's the matter?"
Derek grabbed Meredith's wrist in a haste. "Let's find a place to talk. What about the cafe over there?"
"No, we'll talk here. Let go of my hand."
Meredith didn't want to be snapped quarreling with Derek on the street by the paparazzi. Otherwise, a
sensation would be caused again.
However, Derek's hand was so strong that she could not break free, so she was dragged into that cafe
despite herself.
As soon as Derek release her after they got into the cafe, Meredith drew away from him. She didn't
know what the hell this man wanted.
"Do you know that Parker is in contact with Evelyn?"
Derek cut to the chase.
"Does that matter?" Meredith answered without thinking, her attitude indifferent.
"There might have struck a deal..."
Meredith's eyelids twitched at the word "deal."
She measured Derek's expression, wondering whether he had found out anything…
But it was impossible that her deal with Evelyn got divulged.
"I believe he won't do anything to hurt me."
Meredith considered her words and answered ambiguously.
Derek suddenly clutched the cup in his hand. The veins on the back of his hand popped up.
He had thought that his words would at least make her ask questions or raise doubt in her heart, but
her answer just pricked the last bubble of hope remaining to him.
She believed that Parker wouldn't do anything to hurt her...
This kind of trust was an unattainable luxury between them.
"So you think he's more trustworthy than I am, right?"
Derek asked in a very low voice, suppressing waves of restlessness. This is from NôvelDrama.Org.
Meredith looked down. "Yes."
"In other words, no matter who he is and what he did, you believe him unconditionally?"
"At least he didn't betray me. He was the one who saved my life when I was dying on that uninhabited
island."
Derek had a lot to say but the mention of the past left him tongue-tied.
Meredith saw the man's face slowly sink. No one had ever seen this expression on Derek's face. He
looked dispirited, even a little helpless.
For an instant, Meredith felt her heart softened because of his dejection, but she pinched herself hard
under the table on her thigh.
Thinking about what she'd seen today and those harsh remarks, she made up her mind to get rid of the
distressing entanglement with him.
