The Apple of My Eye

Chapter 1739 Subpoena

Chapter 1739 Subpoena

The lawyer explained the entire process to Sheryl.

Sheryl wasn't exactly in the mood for this. She could feel her chest tightening at the idea of divorcing

Charles. She felt sad.

"Miss Xia? Are you listening?" the lawyer asked tentatively. Sheryl wasn't responding, so he waited for

her to say something.

"Oh, okay. Yes, I've got it."

The lawyer's voice pulled her back to reality.

When she hung up, she became lost in her thoughts again. She spent the rest of the day just

daydreaming until it was time for her to go home.

At the Dream Garden

Charles had come home with Leila. However, Charles left immediately after dinner. He told Leila and

Melissa that he had something to deal with. They knew he was lying because they knew he was just

going to drink.

Melissa already knew from Leila that the Shining Company had lost billions of dollars. She was anxious

and worried, but she didn't want to mention anything to Charles. She was afraid that she would make

her son feel worse.

"Leila, you need to take care of Charles over the next few days. Don't let anything happen to him,

okay?" Melissa said to Leila, a worried look on her face.

Leila nodded her head. Then she assisted Melissa into the living room. "Aunt Melissa, I won't just sit

around and do nothing. I won't let anything happen to him. But you know, I'm only his secretary. I can't

intervene in all of his affairs."

Leila purposely told Melissa this to convince Melissa that she needed to push Charles to divorce Sheryl

as soon as possible. This was the only way that Leila could finally marry Charles.

"Leila, don't worry. Charles just received a subpoena from the court. I haven't given it to him yet

because I know he's been having a rough time lately. I'll give it to him later, though, because he needs

to do it already even though he doesn't want to."

Melissa looked at Leila with determination. She hoped that Leila would believe her.

"Well, Aunt Melissa, I've got it."

They chatted for a while before they went back to their own rooms. Content is © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.

Next day

Melissa went downstairs and saw that Charles was sleeping in the living room again. She didn't know

what to make of this, as this wasn't the first time that it had happened.

Charles was drowning his sorrow in alcohol. Melissa knew that it wasn't just because of the company,

but more because of his divorce from Sheryl.

She couldn't restrain herself as she thought of this, so she approached Charles and gently pushed his

arm.

Charles was still sleeping when he was nudged awake. He groggily rubbed his eyes as he looked at

Melissa.

"Mom, what's going on?" Charles looked like he didn't sleep well last night. His voice was raspy when

he spoke.

"Look at yourself! It's that woman's fault that you're not taking care of yourself! Because of her, you

don't eat or sleep well. Plus, you're always out drinking! Look at what that woman has done to you!"

Melissa was disappointed in Charles, and she made sure to tell him. She finally let out all that she'd

been feeling in the past few weeks.

After she spoke, she threw him the letter.

Charles took it and nonchalantly read the letter. After a few seconds, he had a dark look on his face.

It was a subpoena from the courthouse!

Charles stared at the subpoena in disbelief. He'd figured that Sheryl would give it up already. This was

the last thing that he expected.

"You tried your best to fix this, but, look, she doesn't care anymore. She doesn't respect you enough for

that. She's even using the court to communicate with you. How terrible is that? You just lost a project,

and now, she's sending you a subpoena? Do you think that will affect the company, though?"

Melissa finally told Charles everything that she'd been thinking about Sheryl. She didn't care anymore.

Charles couldn't get his mind off the word "subpoena." He found it difficult to open his mouth and say

something.

Leila, who was just coming downstairs, immediately knew that Charles and Melissa were arguing

based on the looks on their faces.

She quickened her pace as she approached them. She pulled Melissa's arm, then said gently, "Aunt

Melissa, what's going on here? It's so early in the morning. Why do you look so angry already?"

"Sheryl's gone too far. She thought Charles wouldn't divorce her, so now she's humiliating him! Take a

look for yourself," Melissa said to Leila.

Leila pretended she didn't know anything. She looked at the subpoena in Charles' hands, and said with

surprise, "I can't believe she did this! This isn't the time! Will it affect the company?"

Leila purposely brought this up because she knew she was right.

"Enough! I will handle it!"

Charles raised his voice. He then stood up, looking irked. He took the subpoena with him and intended

to head upstairs.

"Charles, why don't you just go through the divorce? She's not worth it!"

Melissa blocked Charles from leaving. She couldn't let him leave just like that.

"Mom, can you just let me handle this, alone?"

Charles looked at Melissa, exhausted. He looked regretful, and Melissa couldn't help but feel sorry for

him. She bit her tongue back when she saw the look on his face.

Upon seeing this, Charles headed upstairs.

Just as Melissa was about to follow him, Leila stopped her.

"Aunt Melissa..." Leila shook her head at Melissa.

She then looked up to make sure that Charles was already in his room before continuing, "Aunt

Melissa, I think that's enough. Did you see the look on his face? Just let it go. Charles probably already

knows what type of woman Sheryl is because she did this. We don't need to tell him that anymore."

Melissa nodded her head in agreement, even though there was still some hesitation. They walked to

the couch and sat down.

"Aunt Melissa, drink some water!" Leila offered as she handed her a glass of water and then sat across

her.

As Melissa took a sip of the water, Leila sighed. "Aunt Melissa, if Charles doesn't push through with the

divorce this time, I don't know what will happen to the company."

"What do you mean?" Melissa asked anxiously, her eyes widened as she put down the glass of water.

Leila shifted her gaze, then said carefully, "Aunt Melissa, it's obvious that Sheryl is after Charles. She's

trying to sabotage him. If Charles keeps doing this, she'll eventually control him. If she asks for the

company, I'm sure Charles will give it to her! Even if she doesn't ask for anything, if she goes public

with the divorce, and tells everyone that it's Charles who doesn't want to sign the papers, how do you

think that will affect the company?"

Leila said as if she had thought a lot about this. Melissa nodded in disbelief. She knew Leila was right.
