Chapter 220 Personally Witnessing Her Happiness

As they reached the second floor, Christian realized that he was still holding her hand. Nancy lowered her gaze and gently reminded him, “Christian?”

He immediately let go and apologized, saying, “I’m sorry.”

Even though he had released her hand, the warmth from their brief contact lingered in his palm, comforting and gentle. Nancy’s hand was petite and soft, even more delicate than he had imagined.

“My mom probably had a long conversation with you downstairs, and she might have misunderstood something. Please don’t take it to heart,” he explained.

“Hmm? What misunderstanding?” Nancy was puzzled, wondering what could have been misunderstood. She had only come to visit him and couldn’t think of any reason for

misunderstandings.

Christian cleared his throat and somewhat embarrassedly said, “Maybe… she misunderstood that there’s something between us, even mistook you for my girlfriend.”

Nancy’s eyes widened in surprise, “Really?”

“Absolutely,” he confirmed.

“Should I clarify it with your mother? It might be awkward when your real girlfriend visits.”

“No need,” he said. “I don’t have a girlfriend just yet.”

She considered for a moment and then blinked her long eyelashes at him, saying, “With your qualities, you must have plenty of girls pursuing you. When the time comes, don’t forget to invite me for coffee.”

“Alright.” He nodded.

The

way he looked at Nancy was complicated. At that moment, he was unsure whether he should be happy or sad. Should he be happy because he had concealed his feelings well and she had never detected a hint of his affection, or should he be sad that she never noticed a clue?

“Nancy?” He called her name, his heart heavy.

“Yeah?”

“How are you and him now? Last time was so rushed that I forgot to ask about both of you. He seemed to have suffered a severe injury. How is his recovery?”

“He’s recovering well, she replied, smiling gently at him. “And we’ve made up

“Yes, we’ve reconciled. We’ve resolved all our misunderstandings, and we’ve confessed our feelings to each other. This time, he deliberately came back from abroad to save me from my kidnapping. He spent a lot of money to save me, and he even took a bullet for me. So, I’m very sure now that he loves. me,” Nancy said. “Christian, I’m very happy and content right now I’ve also shared my secret with him,

told him that he’s the one I’ve loved for ten years. He’s thrilled about it, like a child dancing with joy.”

Her smile remained on her lips, a gentle and soothing expression that radiated a unique sense of peace.

Christian knew that this smile was one of genuine happiness and contentment. It was the joy that could only come from deep within a person.

“That’s great.” He nodded, his emotions becoming even more complex.

When he left, he would often think about her and feel regret. He wondered if there would have been a chance if he had stayed by her side. But now, all he felt was relief. As long as she was happy, it was the best outcome.

Her happiness was contagious to him.

“Why are we talking so much about me? I originally came to see you. How’s your recovery from the injury? Does it still hurt?”

“You seem to have forgotten my profession. This wound isn’t a big deal for me; I’ve recovered well.”

“Well, that’s good.” Nancy continued, “Seeing you like this, I feel much more relieved. By the way, why were you there that day?”

“The person who kidnapped you, Puck Wolfe, was an important lead we had been tracking for a long time. He was connected to a major case, but because of its extensive implications, it wasn’t easy to make a breakthrough. We considered him as one of the potential entry points. Later, we received information that he had kidnapped someone for extortion on the mountaintop. We all rushed there,. but it turned out to be a wrong move. It not only failed to help you but put you in danger. Almost got you hurt.”

“Christian, it’s not your fault, and why would I blame you? Nothing can ensure a foolproof operation. It was an accident.” She comforted.

“I’m relieved that you’re safe. Otherwise, I’d blame myself.”

“Well, you can relax now. I’m fine. See?” She moved her limbs. “I’m like an active little bunny, feeling great.”

The two continued to chat for a while, and then Nancy received a call from Nicholas.

“Hey, Nick.”

“Have you finished your visit?”

“Yeah, I’m almost done,” she replied.

“Alright, come out. I’m waiting for you at the hospital entrance.”

“You’re at the hospital?” Nancy was quite surprised and added, “But Christian had been discharged, and I’m at his house now.”

“Okay, wait for me; I’ll be there soon,” Nicholas said before hanging up. He then urged Lynn, “Drive. Get there right away.”

In reality, he was on his way home, but halfway through, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his wife was visiting a man who had been longing for her. He decided it was too risky, so he asked Lynn to return to the hospital. He didn’t even go home, stayed there waiting, and would only be at ease when he saw his wife.

Truth be told, he wouldn’t be this concerned if it was anyone else. However, this was the Christian they were talking about. He genuinely admired the excellence and determination of the men in the Zayns, and that made him even more cautious.

Nancy hung up the phone and looked at Christian. “I’m glad you’re recovering well. I’ll head home now. Oh, your mom asked me to stay for lunch, and I’m afraid she might already be preparing the meal.”

“No worries. I’ll talk to her.”

“Alright, thank you, Christian.”

With that, the two headed downstairs together. As soon as they arrived, Bella exclaimed, “Nancy, come and sit here with me. I’ve already had the kitchen prepare-

Before she could finish her sentence, Christian interrupted, “Mom, Nancy has something to attend to, so she won’t be able to have lunch with us. I’ll join you for the meal.”

“Oh, but just now…” Bella’s smile faded, and she seemed a bit disappointed. He spoke to her for a moment, calming her down, and she managed to regain her cheerful demeanor. “Alright, next time, Nancy, I’ll invite you for a meal another time.”

“Sure, Mrs. Zayn. I’ll join you for a meal next time.”

“Great.”

When Christian walked Nancy out, Bella still sighed reluctantly.

Luciana had long seen through her mother’s feelings, and as she peeled a grape without missing a beat, she asked, “Mom, do you like that girl?”

“I do,” Bella replied. Suddenly, her gaze shifted as a thought crossed her mind. “Lucy, I don’t know if it’s just me getting older or what, but I was instantly drawn to that girl when I first saw her. She exuded elegance and composure, radiating a sense of dignity. However, the more I ponder on it, the more I feel like she resembles someone, like a remarkable resemblance. I can’t tell if my eyes are deceiving me or if my memory is failing me.”

“Mom, I don’t think you’ve ever met her,” Luciana said.

“Well, this is the first time I’ve laid eyes on her, so perhaps I’m remembering incorrectly. Lucy, could you go outside and bid her farewell?”

“Cynthia, please take care of Mom. I’ll go outside.”

“Of course, go ahead, sis. I’ll stay with Mom.”

Luciana, wearing high heeis, stepped outside and immediately noticed a familiar luxury car. It was identical to her own, except for the license plate. There were only two cars like that in the entire city, so she recognized it instantly.
