4.Chapter 4 Fiancé

Mikayla paused for a beat before taking the call. “Hello?”

In stark contrast to Mikayla’s cool demeanor, Jaxon was all fired up on the other end of the line. “Mikayla, you finally picked up!”

“Just meet me at Islet Café, 10 AM sharp,” Mikayla cut in, and without giving Jaxon a chance to speak, she hung up. She then turned off her phone and buried herself in the soft silk quilt, a wave of sadness washing over her. Letting go of someone she’d loved for so long wasn’t going to be easy, after all.

In a haze, Mikayla drifted to sleep, and when she woke up, it was already nine the next morning. She applied some light makeup to look less worn out. After gobbling down some breakfast and giving her folks a heads up, she set out for the café alone.

As she sat in her car, her phone buzzed with an incoming call from a number she didn’t recognize. For some reason, her mind flashed back to the guy she met at the hospital. She picked up the phone to hear the caller say, “Ms. Salvatore.”

Recognizing the deep voice, she replied with a playful tone, “Hey there, fiancé!” She didn’t know what else to call the guy she’d only met once.

Carlos seemed stunned but eventually replied, “Hey there, fiancée.” NôvelDrama.Org owns this text.

Mikayla’s smile widened. “I’m on my way to cancel the engagement now.”

“I’m out of town. Won’t make it back till tomorrow, but here’s a number—hit him up if you need help,” he told her.

“Got it,” Mikayla said, ending the call. Moments later, her phone chimed with a text, which provided the contact of Elvis Cabello, a big shot who ran Xosa’s shady scenes. He was known for being hardcore, and his reputation for being vicious had people shaking in their boots. Mikayla was shocked, and she couldn’t help but wonder who Carlos was and why he would introduce her to someone like Elvis. ‘Is he worried I’m in danger?’ she thought to herself.

Soon, Mikayla’s ride pulled up to Islet Café—a classy spot with an elegant vibe and smooth tunes playing in the background. The service staff recognized her immediately and led her to the usual spot she shared with Jaxon. As always, he had beaten her there, her regular latte and a slice of chocolate cake already on the table. Today was no different. Jaxon stood up as she approached, looking sharp in his tailored suit. He greeted her with a quick nod, then pulled out her chair—a classy touch—and took his seat once she was settled.

Handsome and from a loaded family, Jaxon used to be Xosa’s most eligible bachelor. Their relationship going public even sparked some haters tossing snide remarks Mikayla’s way.

“Here. Your favorite pink rose!” Jaxon exclaimed, holding up a dozen vibrant blossoms.

Mikayla raised an eyebrow as she accepted them. “Cut to the chase. I know what I want.”

“Go ahead!” Jaxon’s smile remained unchanged.

“I want to cancel our engagement,” Mikayla said.

Jaxon’s smile wavered. “No wiggle room on this?”

Mikayla took a sip of the cappuccino she once loved and shook her head. “And I hope you’ll marry Winona two days later.”

Jaxon looked up and met Mikayla’s gaze. In her beautiful eyes, he could no longer discern the infatuation that once shone so clearly.

“I’m being kind, and that’s the last thing I’ll do for you,” Mikayla added.

“Mikayla, you know I love you! How could you…” Jaxon panicked, a sudden fear of losing her gripping his heart.

Mikayla stared at Jaxon, feeling like he was someone she didn’t even know. “Jaxon, don’t make me lose respect for you. Don’t be the guy who ducks out after hooking up with a woman!”

“I… I…” Jaxon stammered, guilt creeping in. He had to admit, that getting serious with Winona was never part of his plan. All they had agreed on was being friends with benefits.

“I don’t want to make things awkward for either of us.” With that, Mikayla picked up her bag, ready to leave. She couldn’t bear to keep facing him, fearing that if she lingered, she might cave in to the man she had devoted so much love to. But the moment she stood up, her vision blurred and she collapsed.

Jaxon looked at Mikayla, who sprawled unconscious on the table, feeling conflicted. He whispered, “Mikayla, don’t blame me. I’m doing this because I love you too much. Our marriage is meant to be…”
