Chapter 216: Where’s That Man
Chapter 216: Where’s That Man
The rain was pattering outside the window. In front of the French windows at the duplex apartment, Hayden Downey brewed a cup of floral tea for Edison Godfery, "My family was chaotic, so I let someone to take care of Stella in the past two days. I'll pick her up and invite you to dinner when you're free."
"I'm free anytime."
The man on the smoke grey fabric sofa looked gentle with his glasses on. He had the characteristics of his age, being calm and confident, and even his behaviours gave others a sense of security, "It doesn't matter for the dinner. The important thing is that the death of your father, do you think it is so over?"
"The death can't be brought back, Edison. You knew that I don't like dwelling on things that were forgone conclusion." Hayden was exhausted, rubbing her temples.
She hadn't been able to get a good night's sleep for the past two days.
Hayden's father's death was suspicious, but she could not do much due to her status now. Otherwise, she would be inevitably accused of being discontented with the distribution of her father's inheritance unfairly and so picking a quarrel. It didn't matter to her at all, but she didn't want others to talk about Stella Downey behind her back.
"You deserve to have half of the Downey family's assets."
"This really doesn't matter at all."
Edison sighed, looking helpless, "You just don't want to put yourself in trouble. You won't move unless you're forced to a certain extent."
"There's nothing wrong with that. I just hope that my life was simpler."
"Is it simple now?"
Edison said in a deeper voice, "The Beckham is a large family, and it won't be simple with their family feuds."
Hearing this, Hayden was stunned for a moment, "You knew all about it?"
"It's hard not to know it."
Edison said faintly, "He always hogs the news headlines of Asia Finance and other titbits. Your relationship with him seems to be no longer a secret."
Hayden leaned on the sofa, smiling, "Are you sure? Alayna told you part of the reason before, right?"
Edison did not deny it.
Alayna Cole was always delighted to relay messages to Edison. Hayden and Edison had already gotten married just before she met Alayna in the United States. Back then, Edison had just overcome the bottleneck in the development of his career and was in a state of steady rise. Edison also provided financial aid to Alayna, who was engaging in advanced studies of design and facing financial distress.
Thus, a gift blinded the eyes of the wise.
Speaking of Alayna, Edison frowned, "Alayna is not in good condition, and I suggest that she should be admitted to the hospital for treatment. The one who called Kevin, may not have the energy to take good care of her."
"Don't worry. The two are really tight."
Hayden waved her hand, showing that Edison had worried too much about it.
Edison then let out a long sigh and said, "It's one thing to have good feelings, and another to be able to take care of a depressed patient. Besides professional caregivers, no one can be able to guard a patient around the clock as there are always time that he has to go out. Once he went out and something happened, who can be responsible for it? The nanny?"
Hayden was unsure again after hearing what Edison said, "I'll talk to Kevin about it next time."
"Well, for the hospital, I have contacted the best depression treatment and rehabilitation centre in the United States. I suggest letting Alayna go over there for her own sake."
"America?"
Hayden froze for a moment, "Kevin might not accept it."
After all, they would be far apart and having a time difference. Kevin would be freak out if he really let Alayna go.
"Then let's see if he is doing this for himself or if he is genuinely for Alayna's good."
Edison was over sensible, not even considering other's feelings.
But this was understandable to Hayden. After all, Edison was not acquainted with Kevin, and he thought everything from Alayna's point of view. He couldn't care so much about it.
"Okay. I'll talk to Kevin about it clearly."
Hayden frowned as she replied, saying so. But it would be difficult until the time she really talked about it.
They were so absorbed chatting that it was already dark when sending Edison away. Lorraine waved her hand in the night, signalling Hayden to go back.
Hayden nodded, gathered the shawl around her, and turned around. A gust of wind passed through the hall as she opened the door, and just for a moment, the rain poured down. She couldn't help but tremble, feeling the cold weather.
The lift was rising up fast.
The lift door opened slowly after a 'ding' sound and Hayden lowered her head, heading to her house. The sound of her pressing the code was clear in the corridor. When she opened the door, the fragrance of the floral tea permeated the house.
She went to the kitchen to reheat the water. As she was staring at the kettle, a man's voice sounded behind her suddenly, startling her.
"What are you thinking about?"
Hayden exclaimed, covering her chest as she turned around and saw someone tall standing under the incandescent light of the living room. She was unable to see his face, but it was recognizable.
It was Joseph Beckham.
"You scared me out of my wits."
Hayden was pressing her fluttering heart, "Gosh, when did you come? Aren't you still in Shanghai?"
Joseph said blankly, "The project ended and I came back when I heard the news of your father's accident."
The two days of heavy rain in Shanghai had caused all the flights delayed. The roads were closed due to many accidents on the highway. And there was no flight only until this morning.
Hayden still hadn't recovered from the shock just now, with her hands still trembling, holding on the marble table and gasping for air, "You should have said hello when you came back, not just appearing in my house from nowhere. It's terrifying. I regret for giving you the password to my house."
Hayden was just only grumbling, but Joseph took that remark in another meaning hearing this.
"You're not just regretting about this matter only, isn't it?"
Joseph stepped forward, with water dripping onto the floor, leaving dirty stains on it.
Only then Hayden realized that he was soaked to the bone, "What happened to you? Why did you get caught in the rain? Where's Magnus?"
Joseph seemed to have not heard Hayden, stared sorrowfully at Hayden across the marble kitchen console, and said in an icy tone, "Where's that man? You've sent him away, aren't you?"
Joseph couldn't believe that at this time, Hayden was facing him as if nothing had happened. She could still meet him openly after sending away another man in this house.
Hayden's heart missed a beat after being questioned by Joseph, "What man?"
She just blurted out, countering by asking him. In fact, she had already guessed that Joseph might have seen Edison. Content rights by NôvelDr//ama.Org.
"You asking me?" Joseph felt ridiculous, staring at Hayden with a sense of contempt and disappointment, "Are you going to hide it from me unless I tell you myself what I saw?"
"Edison and I are just friends. You took this wrong."
Hayden held her forehead, finally knowing why Joseph was so emotional suddenly.
"A friend?" His sneers sounded in the large room were clear and distinguishable.
