“Oh my… I thought it was Lucas who was coming.”
Veronica entered Deasy’s apartment unit with a puzzled expression. She quickly sat down on the sofa, and Deasy followed suit.
“Lucas? Which Lucas are you talking about?”
“Lucas Orion. The nerdy Lucas.”
Veronica burst into laughter. However, seeing Deasy’s annoyed expression, she quickly covered her mouth.
“Oops… sorry. But why did you think Lucas Orion was coming?”
Deasy leaned against the back of the sofa, taking a deep breath as if she had just gone through something very exhausting.
“Just so you know, Lucas and I have made an agreement and a pact.”
“Huh?” Veronica was taken aback, but she quickly became curious. She wondered what kind of agreement had been made between her friend and the guy who had impregnated her.
“What kind of agreement?” Veronica’s eyes widened. As if remembering something, she grabbed Deasy’s wrist and exclaimed rather loudly, “Don’t tell me you’re getting married? Oh my… finally. So, are you really getting married? Is it a temporary marriage? A contract marriage? Or what?”
Deasy frowned disapprovingly. She playfully hit Veronica with a sofa cushion to keep her from talking recklessly.
“Me? Marry Cupu? You’ve got to be kidding me! There’s no way, Ve. Where would my dignity be if I married him?”
“But if you’re not getting married, what kind of agreement did you make? Besides, why not just get married? It’s clear who the father is. And besides, Lucas is more than willing to take responsibility. It’s not easy to find a guy who willingly takes responsibility when he’s the one who deflowered you. Seriously, that’s rare. Everywhere else, guys just want an easy way out.”
This time, Deasy pinched Veronica’s arm until she yelped in pain. Fortunately, it wasn’t a flick to the forehead or a tug on Veronica’s lips to keep her from blabbering recklessly.
“Ouch, Des! You’re a torturer!”
“Well, you were talking nonsense. It’s easy for you to tell me to marry a guy who’s not my type.”
“But he’s the biological father of the baby you’re carrying. Like it or not, he’s also the one who took your virginity, right?”
“Arghh…” Deasy growled in frustration. Why did Veronica always bring this up and repeat it? She really didn’t like it. “Don’t repeat it over and over; I’m tired of hearing it. I’m also tired of making it clear to you that I’ll never marry Lucas Orion, even if doomsday comes. I’d rather be an old maid with just one guy in the lineup.”
“You’re so arrogant.”
“Well, it’s true.”
“Okay, then what kind of agreement have you two made?”
Deasy took a deep breath. She was reluctant to explain it to Veronica.
“Do you really want to know?”
Veronica sighed while nodding. “Of course, I’m curious. I’m just afraid you’ve made an unreasonable agreement.”
“It’s not that, Ve. I agreed to let Lucas handle all my needs while I’m pregnant with his child. That includes taking care of meals and other things. So, he’s allowed to access my apartment during my pregnancy.”
“See, if he can handle this and that, it’s better to just get married. And what if your belly gets bigger, and people start asking who the father is? What will you say, Des?”
Once again, Deasy took a deep breath. Indeed, this had been a challenging question from the start.
“I’ll think about that later. The important thing is don’t ask me to marry Lucas. I really don’t want to. Period! It’s good enough that he takes care of me like this. We don’t need to get married, live together, or share a room. Arghhh, no!”
After saying those words, at the same moment, Deasy fell silent. She clearly exhibited unusual behavior as she quickly got up and rushed to the sink.
Veronica, puzzled, followed her. In the kitchen, she found Deasy suddenly vomiting repeatedly, even holding onto a chair because she felt weak.
“Des, are you okay?”
Veronica helped guide Deasy to sit in one of the chairs in the dining area. She ran to get a glass of warm water and handed it to Deasy.
“Drink this to feel better.”
Deasy took a deep drink of the water Veronica offered. Afterward, she took several deep breaths while massaging her throbbing temples.
“I swear, my stomach feels so nauseous.”Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Just as she said that, Deasy vomited again. She walked back to the sink, immediately expelling the water she had just drunk.
“Oh my God, Deasy.”
Veronica exclaimed, walking closer, helping massage Deasy’s shoulders while holding onto her friend’s body, fearing that Deasy might become weak and lose her balance.
“Come on, sit down slowly. I’ll help with a massage, okay?”
Deasy complied, moving from the dining area to the living room. She sat there feeling weak and extremely dizzy.
Meanwhile, Veronica immediately fetched some eucalyptus oil, which was always available in the kitchen drawer. She brought it to the living room and started massaging Deasy’s shoulders and feet alternately.
“Should we go to the doctor?”
Deasy shook her head. She felt too lazy to make repeated trips to the doctor, especially when her check-up results were usually the same.
“No need.”
“But you’re so weak like this. I suspect it might be pregnancy-related.”
Deasy nodded in agreement. “It could be. Could you please get the medicine with the purple packaging from the sideboard drawer? It’s anti-nausea and anti-vomiting medicine prescribed by the doctor. Let me take that. Maybe I won’t feel nauseous after this.”
Veronica nodded and quickly retrieved what Deasy had requested. Once she had it, she helped open the packaging and handed it to Deasy for her to take.
“Have you been craving anything lately?” Veronica asked.
Deasy shook her head. She hadn’t felt any unusual cravings at all.
“Nope. I’ve been feeling pretty normal.”
“I’ll pray that you start craving something, but not food.”
“What do you mean?” Deasy looked puzzled.
“Craving not to be far away from the baby’s father.”
Deasy suddenly scowled. Veronica was being really mean, wishing something like that for her.
“You’re wicked!”
“Just so you know how it feels. So, do you want to eat anything? Or is there anything you want? I can get it for you.”
“No, I don’t want anything.”
Shortly after, Veronica’s phone rang. Her husband was calling and asked her to come join him. Reluctantly, Veronica had to leave Deasy, who was still feeling very weak.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay if I leave?”
“It’s okay. You go home; Darwin will be upset if you’re late.”
“But what about you? Later-”
Veronica’s words were cut off as a knock sounded at Deasy’s apartment door. Choosing to answer the door first, Veronica found a man standing there, visiting her friend’s home.
“Yes?”
“Is Ms. Deasy here?”
“Ms. Deasy?”
“Oh, sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Lucas. I came here to-”
“Oh…” Veronica nodded repeatedly. “You’re Lucas Orion?”
“How did you know?”
“Because she talks about you every day.”
“Ah, I see,” Lucas replied, feeling a bit embarrassed.
“I’m Veronica, Deasy’s friend. Nice to meet you. By the way, are you here to take care of and accompany Deasy? It’s quite convenient. I also need to head home soon. But before that, Deasy was vomiting and feeling very weak, so I was a bit hesitant to leave her alone.”
Lucas was taken aback. After Veronica was invited inside, he immediately approached Deasy, who was sitting on the sofa.
“Ms. Deasy? Are you okay, Ms. Deasy?”
“Hmmm…” Deasy replied nonchalantly.
“Please keep her company,” Veronica continued the conversation. “Make sure she has dinner too. She’s probably feeling very weak with an empty stomach.”
“Don’t worry, I brought dinner specifically for Ms. Deasy. I’ll make sure she finishes it,” Lucas assured.
To ensure that Deasy would be fine in his absence, Veronica decided to head home.
Meanwhile, Lucas took out the food container he had purchased earlier specifically for Deasy. He approached her, intending to feed her.
“Let’s eat first, Ms. Deasy. So you won’t feel weak.”
“I don’t have an appetite,” Deasy rejected, as usual.
“I understand. Maybe Ms. Deasy doesn’t have an appetite due to pregnancy. Or perhaps it’s because of my presence. But, at the very least, please don’t be selfish just this once. There’s another life that Ms. Deasy needs to consider inside her. The life of a baby who didn’t have the choice of whose womb to reside in.”
Deasy fell silent. Lucas’s words had struck a chord. Upon careful consideration, she realized he was right.
“Please eat, Ms. Deasy. Even if it’s just a little, as long as you eat something. I’ll help you. If you want something else, just let me know, and I’ll get it for you right away.”
Deasy then accepted the spoonfuls Lucas offered. She chewed and swallowed slowly. But when she found that the food Lucas had prepared matched her taste, she unconsciously finished it all.
Lucas didn’t stop there. After feeding her, he even took the trouble to cut and prepare various fruits as snacks for Deasy.
While she ate, Lucas chose to sit cross-legged at her feet. He extended his hand and gently massaged her, making Deasy feel comfortable.
“Finish the fruits, Ms. Once you’re feeling better, I’ll take you to your room.”
“In that case, please take me to my room now.”
Lucas agreed and got up first. Deasy thought he would help her to her room, but unexpectedly, Lucas did something entirely unexpected. Without asking for permission, he picked up Deasy’s body and carried her to the bedroom.
Deasy was naturally startled and ready to protest. However, once she caught a whiff of the Lavender-scented perfume Lucas wore, she suddenly fell silent. It was as if something had hypnotized her, making her feel incredibly comfortable.
And so, Deasy chose to remain silent. Until a little while later, Lucas had indeed laid her down on the bed.
“You can go ahead and sleep, ma’am. Let me massage your feet again.”
Deasy didn’t refuse, as she usually did. She allowed Lucas to continue rubbing gently while massaging her feet.
Feeling how incredibly soothing Lucas’s touch was, and with the nausea that had been bothering her earlier now gradually fading away, Deasy couldn’t help but relax, experiencing an inexplicable sense of comfort.
