Chapter 1746
Chapter 1746
"She's not in a critical condition at present, but her emotions can't fluctuate anymore. Otherwise, the baby won't be
able to hold on."
Maisie nodded, leaning against the wall as if she had released a breath she didn't know she was holding.
After the doctor got the girl settled in, she entered the hospital room. There, she saw the girl lying on the bed, pale
and thin, with only her belly protruding prominently.
Maisie's heart clenched, and she walked slowly toward the bed.
The girl opened her eyes, a grateful look in her mournful gaze. "I heard from the nurse that... a kind person
brought me to the hospital and even paid my hospitalization fees. It was you, right?"
Maisie pursed her lips, her eyes a bit teary as she sat by the bedside, looking at the girl.
"Thank you," the girl said solemnly, tears suddenly streaming down her face.
Maisie hurriedly pulled out some tissues to wipe her tears. "Don't be so sad. You're still young. You can start anew."
"It's impossible." The girl shook her head in despair. "He doesn't want the child and he will never want me again..."
"You..."
"What I've done isn't honorable. This is my retribution." The girl smiled bitterly. "I was with him because my family
needed money. I thought we could make a fair deal, each of us getting what we needed, but I... I fell in love with
him."
A thunderous roar echoed in Maisie's mind, and her heartbeat involuntarily accelerated. Her temple throbbed with
pain.
Some blurry images resurfaced in her mind, but whenever she tried to focus on them, her head felt like it was
about to split open.
"Ms. Squire, you're here!"
Some people came in just then—Daniel's subordinates.
Maisie was taken aback. "Why are you here?"
"Mr. Quimby has a friend at this hospital, and his friend saw you here," one of them explained in a low voice. "Mr.
Quimby is rushing over. He will be here soon."
Maisie furrowed her brows. She feared this might disturb the girl's rest, so she stepped out.
"Ms. Squire, are you okay?" A subordinate looked at her nervously.
"I'm fine, it's the girl inside," Maisie said with concern. "Bring her some food and necessities. She... She's alone and
she's quite pitiful."
The subordinate immediately went to arrange that while Maisie paced in the corridor.
Daniel arrived soon. Upon seeing her, he immediately pulled her into his embrace.
"I'm sorry," Maisie whispered. "Did I scare you? I just happened to come across a pregnant woman in need of
emergency help and brought her to the hospital..." Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Daniel looked at her quietly, his gaze indulgent.
He took Maisie home, but she remained silent throughout the journey. She seemed as if her soul had been drawn
out and she looked pale.
He hugged her, feeling sorry for her. "Were you frightened for that pregnant woman? Don't involve yourself in
roadside rescues like this again... It's partly my fault for not assigning more people to follow you today."
"No." Feeling tired, Maisie closed her eyes, leaning into his embrace. "Daniel, my head... It hurts a lot. I want to
sleep. Can you stay with me?"
"Of course." Daniel smiled, agreeing gladly.
He lay down beside her, stroking her long hair and patting her back as though he was soothing a child to sleep.
However, Maisie's sleep was restless.
Daniel got out of bed carefully and walked to the balcony to call his subordinate.
"Mr. Quimby, we followed your orders and have been guarding the hospital all along."
"Okay." His deep voice resonated. "Find anything?"
"The pregnant woman... has been transferred to another hospital, a private one. Our people have been at the
hospital's entrance and they spotted a car of the Quimby family."
