Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Sitting next to Marlene, Scarlet noticed that the bowl of medicine on the tea table had gone cold. With
that, she realized that the old lady hadn't drunk her medicine yet.
"Why haven't you drunk your medicine, Grandma?"
"It's too bitter. I'm old. It won't make any difference whether I drink my medicine or not."
"But you need your medicine, Grandma. Let me get you a new one."
Scarlet was very familiar with the mansion. She often visited here when she had nothing else to do.
She got Marlene a fresh bowl of medicine, and urged the old lady to drink it.
With a smile, Hamlin commented, "I suspect that Mrs. Foster did that on purpose. She used to take her
medications without a fuss. But knowing that you would arrive today, she didn't drink her medicine on All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
purpose so that you would coax her."
"Nonsense. I refused to drink because the medicine you decocted is too bitter," Marlene snapped and
glared at her loyal butler.
"It seems that I shouldn't have come here today then," Scarlet joked.
"Don't be ridiculous, my dear. You're always welcome here. But I have to ask. Why did you divorce
Lenny? If you're not with him, how can I protect you? I'm old and only have a few years left. The only
way that you can be protected for the rest of your life is to be Lenny's wife.
Why didn't you discuss with me before you got divorced? Did it ever cross your mind that I would be
angry at you?"
"Grandma... I know you are telling me this for my own good. But my marriage with Lenny wasn't fair to
either of us. We don't love each other, and we both have the right to pursue someone that we like. A
meaningless marriage will only bind us for nothing.
Besides, I'm no longer a member of the Brown family. If they dare to hurt me again, I'll find something
on them and expose it to the media. Let's see then if they still have the guts to hurt me."
Although Scarlet looked determined and confident, she was still scared that the Brown family would
eventually come after her. They were a formidable enemy, and they wouldn't stop until they got what
they wanted.
They tried to kill her unborn child without her consent. If they had an ounce of mercy in their bodies,
they wouldn't have done such a thing.
If it was for the sake of money, Nolan was capable of anything.
The Foster family could indeed shield her from danger for the rest of her life. But she didn't have
feelings for Lenny, and divorcing him was probably for the best.
Besides, he'd already found someone that he liked.
"Then let me ask you this: Did you feel aggrieved when he brought home another woman right after
you two divorced? Did he force you to get a divorce?"
"No, Grandma, it's not what you think. We broke up peacefully. I was actually already thinking of
divorce before Lenny beat me to the punch. We both wanted to end our marriage."
"My dear, don't be afraid. Tell me the truth."
"Grandma... I just did. That's the truth."
However, no matter what Scarlet said, Marlene still didn't believe her.
The old lady had long believed that Lenny fooled around when he was abroad and brought his other
woman home to force Scarlet to divorce.
She knew Scarlet's character all too well. Scarlet was too soft-hearted, just like her mother. She would
rather suffer in silence than take what was rightfully hers.
Marlene regretted that she didn't help Scarlet's mother all those years ago. Now, she wouldn't let the
same thing happen to Scarlet.
How could a girl of unknown origin covet the position of the Foster family's hostess? That girl didn't
deserve it.
As long as Marlene was still breathing, Lenny's new woman wouldn't have an opening into the Foster
family.
Scarlet stayed in the mansion for the night. She didn't go to her room until Marlene fell asleep.
In the Foster family's old mansion, Scarlet could sleep in without scruple. Marlene spoiled her a lot. It
didn't matter even if Scarlet slept until noon.
She didn't get out of bed until eleven o'clock the next morning.
When she went downstairs, all the servants greeted her respectfully as usual and prepared her favorite
food.
Just then, she saw a thin young woman pruning roses in the yard.
Wasn't it the girl that Lenny brought home?
Scarlet was stunned.
"Mr. Carson, why is she here?"
"Mrs. Foster invited her. Mrs. Foster thought that the mansion needed some pops of color, so she
asked Miss Marshall to pick some flowers, put them in vases, and decorate the mansion with them,"
Hamlin replied lightly.
But Scarlet knew that Marlene and Hamlin were deliberately making things difficult for Rosaline.
It was almost high noon, and it was hot outside. Rosaline was a thin, fragile-looking girl. Scarlet
wondered how long she had been out there under the scorching sun.
She knew how it was to get heatstroke, so she worried a little for Rosaline.
"Grandma shouldn't have asked her to do this, Mr. Carson. You should've stopped her."
