Chapter 4
All afternoon I have to listen to Katie saying how beautiful and hot Yan is.
…
The evening comes and while we are getting ready for the party in front of the mirror in my closet, she says: “Will you tell me you haven’t noticed how gorgeous he is, Sky?” I look at her as I pause with my lipstick and say: “Yeah, he’s handsome, so what?” I pretend to ignore it, but inside I realize that this is the first time I’ve admitted out loud what I’ve been thinking all this time after I met him. She just says: “So what, we’re going to be sister-in-law, dammit!” She laughs, I just pretend to find it funny.
…
For the party, I opted for a black dress, a little short, but enough to make me feel comfortable. I don’t like to call too much attention. Katie, on the contrary, chose a very short red dress, which contrasted very well with her white skin and blonde hair. As soon as we arrive, I open the door, Matt sees me and says: “The birthday girl is here!” Everyone looks in our direction, but my eyes catch his. Yan is at the far end of the room talking to two other guys and I swear he looks surprised as he rolls his eyes down my body. Yan introduces me to that guy “This is Max.” He introduces me to Kyle, but I see that he is more interested in Katie’s cleavage. She however even after meeting the guys, still seems totally into Yan. I decide to leave them there talking because I am still too focused on that hug. What the fuck is happening to me? I don’t know, but I have to let it go. I go over to where Matt is and decide to have my drink to try to get these thoughts out of my head. Sometime later, Katie comes up to me and tells me that she is going out with Yan and the other guys. She winks at me and I want to wish her good luck, but I can’t. She says she’s going back to my apartment and I’m going to go back to my apartment and I hand her the keys. I look at them walking out the door and feel my heart squeeze, I conclude that it’s because I’m worried about Katie and for no other reason…. The party suddenly feels a little empty.

I wake up and look at the clock, it’s three in the morning. The party ended at two o’clock and I still haven’t fallen asleep. Matt is sound asleep next to me. I get up and go to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Minutes later I hear the sound of laughter at the door, which is then opened. I hear Yan laughing, while Katie says some nonsensical things and laughs too. She doesn’t seem very much in her normal state, so I go into the living room and find Yan holding Katie with one of her arms resting on his shoulder and his other hand around her waist. Katie lifts her face, looks at me, and laughs saying: “It’s all spinning, Sky!” “What did you do to her?” He looks at me in disbelief and with a smile on his face. “I didn’t do anything!” She’s the one who overdrank. He puts her on the couch and I walk towards them. As I ask Katie if she’s okay, I see out of the corner of my eye that Yan keeps looking at me and, only then do I remember that I’m wearing pajamas, which by the way don’t have the longest shorts in the world. But so what, I had no idea that he would be back here so soon. He then says: “I was going to take her to your place like she asked, but then I remembered that I have no idea where you live.” He laughs, I guess she wasn’t the only one who drank tonight. I say after some thought. “Dammit!” Katie is going to hate waking up here after all this. I stand up and feel Yan’s eyes follow me. I turn to him who looks away and say: “What do I do? Matt lent Gabe his car and I don’t want to wake him up now.” Yan interrupts me: “Tell me your address and I’ll take her. I’m in Kyle’s car.” I look at him incredulously, stand up and walk toward him, saying: “You drove after drinking and still brought my friend with you?” He just laughs and says: “Calm down! I couldn’t let her finish the strip-tease she started at that bar!” “Strip-tease? What strip-tease?” “Katie climbed up on a table in the middle of the bar we were at and started taking off her clothes.” I’m flabbergasted and he continues: “I was enjoying it, but there were a lot of cell phones pointed in her direction and then I realized that you wouldn’t like seeing your friend naked tomorrow on all the social networks.” Okay, maybe he scored a point in your favor by bringing her back home. “But that still doesn’t justify you driving around after drinking!” He just says: “Wow, you look like Matt! How old are you? Fifty?” It annoys me in a way I can’t explain, just because he’s irresponsible and I’m not, doesn’t mean I’m that much older than him. So I answer: “I’m 21!” I just wonder why after I say that he looks me up and down biting his lower lip. But I don’t question it though. “Okay, then tell me your address and I’ll bring her to your house!” “You’re not going to take her by yourself, like that.” “Then what are you going to do?” “I’ll come with you!” I don’t know why, but he seems to like that idea. He then says: “And you’re going like this?” I look at my body and remember that I’m only in my pajamas, but I’m not going back to Matt’s room to put on that tight dress. I say: “Yep.” He doesn’t question it. I say more to myself than to anyone in the room: “I’ll come back early tomorrow morning and explain to Matt why I left in the middle of the night. You better slow down. Stop it Sky! I didn’t even drink that much!” I give up on him. I turn to the back seat to find Katie looking like she is sleeping and doped up and that is exactly what is happening. I then turn forward and as I look out at the street, I think: “Katie, you owe me one!” … We arrive at the front door of my apartment, Yan has to carry Katie the same way he carried her when he arrived earlier at Matt’s apartment. As he holds her and she mumbles something inaudible, I put my keys in the door. We put Katie on my bed. As I watch her there, Yan crosses his arms and says: “Won’t you walk me to the door?” He has something different in his eyes, but I don’t question it and walk with him to the door. “That’s it!” I say when we are finally outside. Then he starts to walk around me while looking at me smiling. I have no idea what this kid is up to. He stops with his back to the door. He still looks at me. Then I hear the sound of the key being turned in the lock. I ask, already a little anxious: “What are you doing?” He holds up the keys and says: “You’re going somewhere with me! Are you crazy Yan? I’m not leaving here, especially at this hour!” “Oh yes you are.” I have your keys, did you forget?” He says as he waves them between his fingers in front of my face. Give it back here, Yan! I say as I walk toward him. But he just laughs as he lifts the keys even louder: “If you don’t come with me now, you’ll stay outside, because your friend is passed out inside.” I stand there with my arms crossed and stare at him. He looks at me and says: “Are you not coming?” I just say: “No! Then I’ll have to go to plan b.” And I’m sure it won’t be good.
