Chapter 23
Picking a Fight on Purpose
"Understand what?" he asked, puzzled.
Harper pressed her lips and asked directly, "Where were you tonight? Didn't you say you would come home early? We were supposed to visit Grandpa."
"I had something come up last minute, and I already told Mom."
"Did you tell me?"
The man's brow furrowed tighter, sensing more and more that Harper had changed.
Her words were sharp and confrontational.
This wasn't the gentle woman he knew, and it jarred him.
"If you're upset because I didn't tell you, it was my fault. It won't happen again, okay?"
Harper fell silent.
Benjamin's face was solemn, and he spoke in a deep voice, "If you have any other problems, just say it now."
"It's not that I have problems, but how long are you going to lie to me?"
"What do you mean lie to you?"
Harper felt completely helpless, wondering why Benjamin wouldn't admit it at this point.
She said, "Benjamin, you don't need to hide things from me. We are getting divorced anyway. I wish you could just be honest with me. Even if you were going to pick out a wedding dress with Lauren to prepare for your upcoming wedding, you could've told me. So, I wouldn't have felt like a fool calling to disturb you two."
They were husband and wife, and yet they didn't even have a single photo together.
Apart from a marriage certificate and the sex, she couldn't find any other signs of them being a married couple.
Harper's heart ached terribly as she thought about this.
Her heart ached for the year she had been by his side, and for the end of their marriage.
She didn't regret loving him, but loving him felt like a cruel twist of fate.
Harper quickly lowered her head, not wanting Benjamin to see the tears welling up in her eyes. She refused to let Benjamin see her weakness.
Benjamin's eyes widened, his gaze filled with shock as he said, "What wedding dress? Harper, what are you talking about?"
"Can't you just admit it?"
"Why would I admit to something I didn't do? Harper, this isn't like you. Where's all this suspicion coming from?"
Benjamin loosened his tie, his hands on his hips, and his handsome face looked cold and sharp.
He exuded a sense of cold indifference.
Benjamin stared intensely at the woman before him. He barely contained his emotions anymore. "Are you making this up to push me into a divorce?"
Harper looked up, her eyes wide. "Lauren told me you were picking out a wedding dress, Benjamin. If you're worried I'll expose you in front of Grandpa and your parents, you can rest easy. I'm not that despicable, and I wouldn't do that."Content is © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.
She had loved her so much. Now, it was his insistence on divorce that showed her just how little she meant to him.
She'd put up a wall to keep some scrap of dignity for herself before he could destroy her completely.
Benjamin understood her point.
"Look, maybe you misunderstood. I was just helping her pick out some clothes since she's leaving the hospital today. And she was just using my phone so she could call her former agent." "So, you're saying I'm accusing Lauren of nothing and lying about you two?"
"I didn't say that."
"But isn't that what you mean? I don't understand why your phone always happens to be with Lauren whenever I try to call you. If you don't want to answer, then I won't bother calling anymore."
Her voice trembled, nearing a breaking point. Her hands clenched tightly under the covers. She feared she might lose control and start crying.
Benjamin's eyes narrowed as he stared at her intently, his voice harsh. "Harper, are you just picking a fight on purpose?"
