His Knees 14

I couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh. "So, you'd rather think I was unfaithful? Let me live with that accusation for years? Just to keep me around, to keep the illusion that everything was fine?"

Nathan's voice trembled, his face crumbling under the weight of his

own guilt. "I just wanted you to stay. Even if it meant believing the worst. As long as you stayed.."

His words made my stomach turn. I had fought for years-*years*-to

make him believe in me, to prove my loyalty, and now he tells me he never really cared. It was easier for him to live in doubt than face the truth.
