Chapter 440 We Are All Clever Individuals
His voice wasn’t loud. In fact, it wasn’t enough for Adrian on the other end of the phone to hear.
Caught between the two of them, Lysander couldn’t help but feel a wave of annoyance. She had already encountered enough trouble recently and neither had the time nor the inclination to waste energy on such trivial matters.
While on the phone, Adrian sensed her silence and took the initiative to ask, “Did you go to see Josiah again?”
“No, it was a chance encounter.”
“It seemed like he harbors quite a grudge against me.”
“Dr. Sutton, what are your plans for the future? Are you going back to Stounia, or do you plan on working here?”
“Why are you suddenly asking this?”
Lysander said, “Anesthesiologists are in high demand, both domestically and internationally. I just think that if you could continue your medical career, no matter where you are, you would be able to help a lot more patients.”
Adrian’s laugh had a touch of melancholy. “I understand what you mean. I’ll try to call you less in the future.”
Lysander opened her mouth, wanting to deny it, yet she found herself unable to utter words that would contradict her heart.
What she had just said, indeed, conveyed that meaning.
“All right, Lysander. I understand. I’ll give serious thought to what you just told me.”
“Okay.”
Lysander put away her phone, ignoring the disgruntled look on Josiah’s face. She turned around and headed toward the hall door, never once looking back.
Daphne had been waiting alone at the dining table for Lysander for quite some time. When she returned, she didn’t question her about why she had been in the restroom for so long. Instead, she simply reported, “Not long after you left, they moved to a different location for photos. I noticed that Josiah seems to favor Tiffany over that pretentious woman now.”
“She’s a new flame, so it is quite normal,” Lysander responded absentmindedly, appearing rather uninterested. She didn’t seem to want to discuss matters concerning others. any further.
Daphne noticed a shift in her mood and asked with concern, “What’s wrong?”
Lysander picked up her fork and resumed eating. “It’s nothing really. It’s just that the corridors outside are a bit complicated. I almost lost my way.”
She didn’t want Daphne to worry alongside her, so she quickly made up an excuse to brush the matter aside.

Believing it to be true, Daphne pushed the dessert that the waiter had just brought toward her. “Have some sweets to calm your nerves. The view here is quite nice, but the unlit areas can be a bit eerie at
night.”
“Okay.”
Lysander picked up the spoon and tasted the panna cotta.
After they finished their meal, it wasn’t too late. Daphne suggested, “Let me take you home.”
Lysander thought about the potential visitor at home and shook her head. “That won’t be necessary. You’ve been incredibly busy these past few days, so you should head home and rest. Paying back the money is just the first step. There will be plenty more for you to deal with later.”
Daphne sighed heavily as she remembered the mess Everhart Corporation was in, momentarily forgetting to ask about her plans.
As expected, Lysander took a cab back to her place, and there, in the hallway, she saw Adrian.
Just like before, he was carrying bags of various sizes filled with–shopping items. The only difference was that this time, he had also brought along a toolbox.
Adrian must have been waiting for her for quite some time now. When the voice–activated light flickered on, his initial reaction was to squint as the sudden brightness stung his eyes.
“Why have you come so late?”
Adrian replied with a smile, “We can discuss everything else later. Your bedroom light is broken. It could be a bit risky if you need to get up at night.”
“You didn’t have to come all this way to fix the light at such a late hour. What time is it already?”
“As a girl living alone, there’s a risk if something were to happen, and there’s no one around. Even if you: call for help, it would take time for someone to arrive. So, it’s best to be extra careful.”
They had already reached her doorstep. To forcibly drive him away at this point would seem rather inhumane.
When Lysander opened the door for him, the lights in the living room had just come on. White Coat, which had been lying excitedly on the couch, sprung up and cheerfully dashed toward the entrance to greet its master.

White Coat first circled around Lysander’s trouser leg, waiting for her to bend and stroke it. Then, it scampered over to Adrian’s feet, excitedly placing its paw on his shoe.
Gently setting down the items he was carrying, Adrian finally had a free hand to scratch his head, speaking in a warm voice, “Good. Play by yourself for a bit. I’ll come back later to take you for a walk.”
Before he’d even finished speaking, he’d already made a beeline for the kitchen with an ease that spoke of familiarity. Tying on an apron, he said to Lysander. “This time, I didn’t buy any semi–finished products. I’ve chosen all fresh ingredients. That piece of beef brisket is particularly good. I can make a stew for you. I learned a stew recipe online, and it’s especially good for girls.
The sound of the refrigerator opening echoed from the kitchen quickly, indicating he was organizing the

ingredients he had brought.
On her way back, Lysander had made up her mind. She could no longer comfortably accept his kindness. However, when it came time to voice this, she still found it incredibly difficult.
Better a short–term pain than a long–term torment. Hurting his feelings now was far preferable to giving him false hopes and then cruelly snatching them away.
“Dr. Sutton, it’s really late. You really don’t have to go through all this trouble.”
voice,
Adrian sensed the distance in her quickly peeking out from the kitchen to ask, “What’s wrong? Don’t
you like beef stew? I can switch it to fish stew. I bought fish too.”
Lysander looked him straight in the eyes. “No need. I’ve already had my meal outside.”
Recalling what she had mentioned over the phone, Adrian nodded and said, “I understand. You’ve just met with Daphne. I’ll prepare it now, so you can simply heat it up for breakfast tomorrow. You don’t have to cook then.”
He was truly considerate in his thinking.
Given the circumstances, Lysander had no choice but to be more forthright. “I’m an adult, and I can take care of myself. By the way, how much did you spend on shopping for me today? I’ll transfer the money to you right away.”
Without showing any emotion, she firmly established her boundaries with him.
A fleeting bitterness flashed in Adrian’s eyes, his smile gradually fading. Yet, his demeanor remained. gentle. “You don’t have to be so formal with me. Consider these things as gifts for White Coat. If you don’t like them, I won’t buy them anymore.”
Without any hesitation, Lysander nodded. “Okay, I can take care of my own meals. You don’t need to trouble yourself running back and forth for cooking duties anymore.”
Everyone involved was smart, knowing when to stop talking to avoid hurting others unnecessarily.
“I understand,” said Adrian as he slowly returned to the kitchen to remove his apron. It wasn’t his first time being rejected by Lysander, but the disappointment was still evident on his face. He took a deep breath to compose himself before stepping out.
Having changed into her slippers, Lysander was comfortably seated on the couch, gazing at the night view outside the window.
Adrian hid his disappointment well in front of her, acting as if nothing was amiss. He casually picked up his toolbox and said, “Since I’m already here, if you don’t need me to cook, I can fix the light for you before I leave. Is it still in the bedroom? I’ll go and take a look.”
