You’re leaving like that?
Sitting on the couch, Elfedio felt so disgusted that Rebecca was the one who told them the truth. However, he was more disappointed in Emerson because he seemed to be the weakest man he ever knew.
“I know you’re upset, darling, but our daughter is old enough to be on her own,” Bernadette reminded him as she sat down beside him. “In the end, her decision will still be the one to be followed.”
“You don’t need to remind me that, but your daughter, you must remind her to be mature and to choose someone who can protect her,” Elfedio replied.
“Do you think Emerson isn’t the one who can do that?”
“What else? Do I need to tell you one-by-one why I don’t really want him to be my son-in-law?” Elfedio asked. “He’s just a poor man: a gardener or a peasant; how will he support the family they’ll have in the future?”
“Remember that day when you fell in love with me? Do you know why I fight for you against my parents?” Bernadette asked as she reminisced about those moments.
“Hmm, you’re starting again, you can’t get me through that, it was us, we truly loved each other, and you know, the world had changed,” Elfedio explained.
“Perhaps you judged him early. We didn’t totally know him. He might be more than just what we are thinking. What if we give him a chance to get to know each other?” Bernadette suggested as she cuddled him.NôvelDrama.Org content.
“And introduce us to his indigent family? No! I can’t accept that.” Elfedio stood up and took some steps. “I’d choose to die than to have him as my daughter’s husband.”
“Well, that’s your choice, but we mustn’t rob our daughter of her happiness.”
Elfedio sighed. He already told his men to dispatch Emerson, but because he knew that she was falling in love with him, he needed to support her, although he didn’t like her boyfriend.
“Hi Mom, Dad,” Rebecca greeted as she suddenly entered the room. “Are you talking about me? Please, I hope you understand why I had to do that.”
“I already told you.” Elfedio starts panicking, as if he didn’t really want to see his daughter’s face again, because he only remembers what happened, which was so embarrassing for him.
“I’m sorry, dad,” Rebecca apologized as she slowly knelt down on the floor. “Please forgive me for being such a jerk.”
“What are you doing?” Elfedio queried, then offered her a hand while Bernadette stood up. “Who told you to kneel down in front of me?”
“No one, dad, but I still want to do this for you to forgive me.” Rebecca said, as if she had really made the greatest mistake of her life. “I didn’t mean to fall in love with Emerson. All I remember was that he arrived, then everything-you know-the happening was so quick that I hadn’t noticed we were falling in love.”
“Child, you don’t need to apologize for what you felt. There’s nothing to worry about,” Bernadette said as she helped her daughter stand up. “Love is the most uncontrollable thing in this world, but make sure that it is what you feel.”
“Does it mean that you’re giving us your approval?” Rebecca asked.
Elfedio sighed. “What else? We can’t endure seeing our stubborn daughter sad.”
“Thanks Dad and Mom!” Rebecca turned around several times and seemed to jump, but then she suddenly cuddled them with a throbbing heart.
“Hmm. So, what are you waiting for? Tell your boyfriend to stop working, because from now on, he won’t be treated as a gardener,” Bernadette said.
“You!” Elfedio yelled, wanting to go against his wife.
“Darling, you must know, we need to do this in order to make sure of our daughter’s future,” Bernadette explained as she went back to the couch and sat down.
“You don’t need to fight about this. I can be poor for Emerson. Perhaps with that, you won’t need to worry about me anymore,” Rebecca replied.
“What? Are you out of your mind?” Elfedio scowled. “We can’t even protect our family in this situation. How much more if you become poor?”
“But Dad, I had read that poor people live peaceful lives far from trouble because they desire no wealth but happiness.”
“Tut, whatever you say, we’re not going to let you go with that peasant; I’d rather have him stay here and associate with his disgusting demeanor than have you leave.”
“Oh! Thank you, dad; I know you can’t stand my cuteness. Don’t worry, I won’t leave as long as everything goes well!” Rebecca half-shouted as she took the stairs.
“What do you think?” Bernadette asked. “I hope you won’t be stressed when Emerson stays here with us, though you’re already stressed because of your daughter.”
Step by step, Emerson hauled himself towards the dormitory. He was trying to observe what was happening around him, and he could hear the plants talking about him in silence and the wind mocking him all the while.
“I already told you to stop being close to her, but you’re so stubborn,” Damian said as he appeared beside Emerson. “Look what happened. You brought everyone into a shock and now the workers are talking about you.”
Emerson remained in silence as he remembered who told him to follow his heart, and now Damian is the one who is going against himself. All Emerson knew was that they couldn’t be telling the truth because his boss would probably explode if he found out what was going on.
“So, what’s your plan now?” Damian asked. “For sure, Elfedio was mad at you, especially since they already knew the truth before you told them.”
“Perhaps I’ll go back home and take a rest for a while. I know, they are mad at me, and it’s not my job to change what they feel, because I can’t.”
“What? You’re leaving your job like that?” Damian exclaimed and furrowed his forehead. “What about Rebecca? Don’t you love her? What’s your plan?”
“Brother, you don’t know how much I love Rebecca. I’m doing everything for her, and I’m also leaving for her. You don’t need to tell me. I know it’s painful that everything will just end like this, but this is the best thing to do.”
“Why won’t you tell her about your plan? For sure she’ll understand you, and so that you can’t hurt her feelings either,” Damian advised.
“I’ll just cry if I see her face again before I leave, and she too, she might cry seeing me leaving, but she’ll go with me.”
“You stubborn man. Don’t be like that; if you really love someone, you know how to understand them and maybe to let them go.”
Emerson sighed. “This conversation is just messing my mind. I’m going back home later in the middle of the night, and nothing can stop me, even you’ll chain me!” He continued inside his room and slammed the door.
“But!” Damian insisted. “Don’t make a final decision if you’re mad!”
