Chapter 198
Hector POV
"Is that why my mother died in childbirth, because she had me?" A sadness to her tone.
Honesty...I was being honest with Kala. Sharing with her the research I had uncovered this far. It was a long journey and the opportune time to work on us... the trust between us.
"Yes, I think so. From what I have read, only one is alive in the world at one time." I continue.
"So... if I have children..."
"Then we won't have children." I bluntly reply.
"Hector, be serious. We are alphas. Our packs depend on us having heirs, keeping the future of the packs secure."
Her horrific miscarriage comes back to me, she barely survived that. And I think she only survived it by turning her heartache into hatred towards me at the time. I don't think she can survive that happening to her again.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
"Let's not worry about things that are years ahead of us. Let's just see what information we can find from your past pack.
The council don't even know if another pack took over it or if the land was divided up and merged into other neighbouring packs. There isn't a lot of information before the attack on the Clear Waters pack." "Maybe we should have brought guards?"
"No, bringing guards makes it look like we are expecting trouble. We are just a recently mated couple
basis. You do not mention your connection to this pack, you pretend you exploring packs for a historic have no attachment to the pack. We are just visitors, do you understand?" My command is heavy, she had to follow my lead on this. "Yes Alpha!" She smirks, before giving a playful salute.
"We still have some miles to cover so if you want to rest, I suggest you do that now."
"Do you want me to drive?"
"Can you drive?"
"I don't actually know."
"So we will add driving and gun handling to your list of training." I smirk at her before putting my foot on the gas pedal, as I leave the small human town behind us..
We still had a good hour to cover but I was growing more sceptical of this blacked-out pickup truck behind us. It had been following us for a few miles now and my wolf was growing anxious of its closeness.
The satnav had taken us down some country lanes in an attempt to avoid an incident on a main road which had resulted in long queues.
It could just be that this pickup truck was doing the same route as us, avoiding the main roads. But I couldn't ignore the tingles of warning on the back of my neck.
As I come to a cross roads, I take the opposite direction of the satnav's suggestion, ignoring the diversions and going off route. If this pickup truck was innocent, it would follow the correct route.
I slow down, wanting to see what they decide...they seem to take their time even with no other traffic around, the roads were clear.
I let out a deep sigh when it continues on the correct path, and I continue on this road...as the satnav calculates its new route,
I pull up, parking my SUV on the side of the road. There were gates up ahead, that were currently. unmanned but locked. I wanted to scout the area first before rolling up in a car and demanding entrance. Although...things didn't look very active. Maybe these were the outer gates to deter humans entering on to lands, which was quite common.
Removing my seat belt I lean over, stroking Kaia's hair before kissing her on her temple.
"Wake up Kala."
"We are here?" She hums out, snuggling her face into my chest.
"Yes, we need to walk."
wen
"They won't let us in?" She instantly becomes wide awake.
"I want to do a surveillance first, get an idea of their numbers."
"Okay, I'm ready."
We both walk over to the gates, getting an idea of what level of security this pack had.
Only to find things didn't seem to sit well with me. There was no one at the gates, not even the outer gates...which should have some kind of eyes on.
Kala pulls on the locked gates which do not budge under her strength. With my disapproving growl she starts climbing the railings, jumping down and dusting herself off.
I follow suit and even as I land, I'm surprised that no alarms blear out, no guards jump out of their hiding space to question our unauthorised entry.
"Let's keep moving." Kaia suggests and we walk down the path, as signs of buildings start to come into
vision.
In the distance you could hear the sounds of trickling water, and as we push through overgrown grass and wildflowers we come to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by rocks. "Does this look familiar?" I turn to her, her eyes watching the falling water with wonder.
"No nothing, let's keeping moving."
As we keep moving Kaia points to the coastal line, the crystal waters below which ironically now remind her of the Nightshade Reformed pack. This wasn't right, something was wrong. Where was everybody.
"Kala, maybe there wasn't a resettled pack. Maybe the back that attacked..just left everything as it was. It would explain the overgrown landscape and the lack of people." I mean this was like a ghost pack. As we push in more towards the central reservation of the pack, my wolf is now on high alert readying to shift at any second.
And when I see them, I understand why.
"Hector...look." Kaia's voice quivers at my side, my arms wrapping around her pulling her in to me.
Skeletons scattered across the ground, outside the small pack member's houses and even heading up to the path to the alpha house.
This was a pack that had been terminated in one swift attack. This was a destroyed pack.
