Chapter 27 Ghosts

Louis glanced at the clock on the wall. She had been working on this for hours. Wasn't she tired?

And the light was so dim, and Blanche thought he was being unreasonable. She gently pinched the golden thread of the braided petals and then took out a black patch from the drawer and handed it to him.

"Here, wear this while you sleep."

She dimmed the lamp another notch, but that made it harder for her to see.

She accidentally pricked her finger with the sharp needle.

"Ouch."

She quickly drew back her hand and winced as a bead of blood was drawn.

Somehow, seeing the blood on her tender finger made Louis jolt, as if he were pricked too.

Blanche pulled out a piece of tissue to wipe off the blood. She yawned and continued to mend her dress.

Louis looked down at her head and clenched his fists. This woman kept pushing his limits, staying up late to mend a ruined dress.

He opened a drawer, took out a card, and threw it on the desk.

"Take this card and buy a new dress tomorrow. Now go to sleep."

The card rolled over. Dazed for a moment, she picked it up and turned it over in her fingers. As she studied the golden card, Louis sneered. So, she was doing all this for money. What a greedy woman!

"That's generous of you, but you should keep it for yourself. I may not be rich, but I won't ask for money from others. I'm mending this dress not because I can't afford a new one, but because I haven't worn it yet. It would be wasteful to throw it away."

She pinched the card and pushed it back.

Louis frowned in surprise and turned away.

"I guess it's not enough for your appetite."

With that, he flipped a switch and turned on all the lights.

Blanche was surprised.

"You're not going to sleep? Turning on the lights will make it even harder to sleep."

Louis sat on the edge of the bed with his back to her.

"I've already woken up anyway."

Blanche's eyes swiveled. She was dazed for a moment before she worked faster.

After an hour, she finally finished her work. The cuts were no longer visible, and the golden flower on the chest added a pop of color.

She looked over at Louis, who was still sitting there scrolling through his phone with a poker face.

"Go to sleep," she whispered, feeling a little guilty.

She went to turn off the lights and lay down on the couch.

She was exhausted and soon fell asleep.

After some time, she felt a cool breeze on her head as if a wind was blowing straight into her brain.

She sat up and sneezed, looking over at the floor-to-ceiling window. It was hazy outside, and she found the window had been left open.

She got up from the couch and went to close it.

As she was closing it halfway, a bizarre scene unfolded. A hand suddenly reached out and grabbed her wrist, followed by a white figure appearing in front of her.

Blanche was so scared that she almost fell to the ground. One of her slippers came off, and she ran back barefoot.

"Ah! There's a ghost! Help! Help!"

She didn't believe in ghosts, but the scene in the middle of the night managed to make her skin crawl. Her heart raced as she wondered if her prank at the club before had evoked a spirit.

The person who had grabbed her frowned.

Was this woman trying to wake up everyone in the villa with her screaming?

She was ignorant. There were no ghosts in the world, okay? He lost sleep and felt irritable. Ever since he married Blanche, his life seemed to have been deviating from its usual course. He had come to the balcony to clear his head and get back on track.

"It's me."

A familiar voice rang out.

Blanche clutched her chest, raised her head, and blinked. She leaned over for a look and found it was a human face. Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.

Annoyed by her approaching, Louis turned his head away.

"Ignorant woman, there are no ghosts in this world."

Blanche rubbed her chest, relieved that it was Louis. He had scared the hell out of her, and she sulked.

"What are you doing on the balcony in the middle of the night? I was scared to death."

When she was up, he wanted to sleep. When the lights were off, he no longer wanted to sleep. Instead, he had come out to get fresh air. What was his problem?

"Scared to death? Isn't it better? I'll no longer have an ugly wife."

Hadn't Zach and his men said the same thing about her last night?

Blanche wrinkled her nose. This man just couldn't talk nicely. She had almost had a heart attack back there.

...

Louis stepped forward and casually leaned against the wall, his eyes locked on her.

"Hmph. If I die of fright, I'll come to haunt you every night. You'll be sleepless and have a mental breakdown. Alright, enough for the talk. Go to sleep."

Blanche yawned and rubbed her eyes. She tried to go back, but the man refused to let go of her hand.

She was yanked back and stumbled.
